Periodontics is associated with treatment and prevention of periodontal tissues diseases. The most common periodontal diseases are gingivitis, periodontal disease and periodontitis. The advanced stage of each above mentioned disease threatens teeth loss.
Which symptoms should prompt you to visit a periodontist?
The main symptoms are gum bleeding or swelling, itching, bad breath, formation of ulcers in the mouth, emergence of "pockets" between the tooth and gum, and tooth mobility. The last symptom is, perhaps, the most disturbing and often indicates an advanced disease. In this case, treatment should begin as soon as possible.
Diseases of periodontal tissues are observed with nearly 50% of patients. There are many causes, but the most common of them are the lack of oral hygiene and the presence of dental plaque – tartar and calculus. Other factors include:
- Diseases of internal organs and metabolic disorders;
- Malocclusion (injured soft tissue, and tooth enamel cleaning disrupted by chewing);
- Poor quality of dental intervention;
- Immunity disorders, lack of vitamins.
Timely complex treatment allows saving your teeth and completely restoring the periodontium. The stage of disease at which the patient asks for help is very important. In the later stages of periodontitis, when the process of deformation of bone already takes place, you may need surgery.
The basis of prevention is regular proper dental and oral cavity hygiene by means of a toothbrush and dental floss, as well as professional teeth cleaning at the dentist's office every six months.
